Brisbane Highlands Circuit Race
Cat. 3

When we got to the venue I got registered and rode around the outside of the course to warm up.
Brisbane is an up and down 1.7 mile circuit, with no flat part... I really liked the look of the up hill finish.

I didn't want to just sit in and sprint at the end. During the race I pulled for a bit. With a few laps to go someone attacked. No one wanted to do anything about it and she had a team bocking people from bridging up to her. But I wanted to bring her back so I went trying to bring her back. The gap was getting smaller and when we came to the bottom of the climb I put it in and bridged up to her, bringing the pack with me.

I was feeling satisfied with what I had done in the race. I didn't know if I would still have a sprint in the end. I was still going to try though. I knew where I had to be and where my sprinting spot was. Coming up to the finish it was five across. I haven't been in a race when it was like that before. But I was all the way on the left side(the outside). I was looking and I wasn't very happy with being there because, what I thought would happen was the people in the inside would go first. I don't know why it just seemed like the most likely thing. I didn't have time to move though. I was right and the two inside riders went first, I jumped and came around the people in front of me to be with the riders that went. I could see my light pole and when it came I stood and went. I could see one rider out the corner of my eye( Anne Fulton - Alto Velo). She stayed in the corner on my eye and I came across the line first.
I had such a fun time, it was definitely my kind of race.

SHELLEY OLDS 12th WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

I went into the race tonight with intentions of making the race fast and racing aggressively. I feel I did what I came to do.

How it all played out: There was an attack by the Canadian rider, Tara Whitten within the first five laps. She didn't separate herself from the pack, she simply got the field strung out and chasing hard. The pace was pretty high for the next 10 laps and then there was a lull with about 20 laps to go, so I attacked solo from high on the track. I got a good run off the banking and created a nice 1/4-lap gap from the field right away. For the next 5 laps, I was off the front and extended my lead to 1/2 lap on the field with 2 riders chasing and making their way across the gap. It was the Canadian and the Spanish rider. As soon as they caught me, I pulled up track and got back on the back of the group to try and work together to gain a lap on the field. Unfortunately, the Canadian rider was the only one willing to work and I was knackered from being off the front by myself for 5 laps. Eventually 3 more riders came across the gap and now the group was 6 and too big for organized work. So, we ended getting caught by the field with about 9 laps to go and then the crash happened. After that it was fast and the bunch was all together with the sprinters sitting comfortable in the pack waiting for the bell to ring for the last lap. I tried to stay near the front, but the accelerations for the finish proved to be too much for my legs after my attack and I could only manage to follow wheels to the finish line.

I took a chance and it didn't work. I feel I made the race though, and on any given day, that move could have worked. I buried myself to try and make it work and when it came back together with 9 to go, I had nothing left in the tank to sprint. I raced and I have no regrets. Next year I will come back fitter, faster, and smarter and make the move that works.

The hematocrit (Ht or HCT) or packed cell volume (PCV) or erythrocyte volume fraction (EVF) is the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells. It is normally about 46% for men and 38% for women.[1] It is considered an integral part of a person's complete blood count results, along with hemoglobin concentration, white blood cell count, and platelet count.

In mammals, hematocrit is independent of body size.

The term "hematocrit" (British English: haematocrit) was coined in 1903. Its roots stem from the Greek words hema (Gr αίμα) - blood, and krites (Gr κριτής), judge - meaning to gauge or judge the blood.

I raced the Women's open category in a small field of 15. It was sunny with big ominous clouds and 50 degrees with 15mph gusts of wind. It started out fast for about 3 laps but really slowed down except for the primes. There were a lot of primes and I got 3 of them. Jane and I tried for a break but were dragged back. The group spent most of the race watching each other and jockeying for position. It really did feel like a points race and I'm so happy I raced Thursday at the track to get a feel for it again. The cross-tailwind finish was fast and I threw my bike hard for a second place behind Jane Despas who won. The 3 1/2 hour drive was well worth it!

WORLDS WEEK - Day 1 and 2

While preparing for my trip to Poland, several thoughts were going through my mind, One being that I was embarrassed to say I knew very little about Poland other than Polka, sausages and vodka.

Many friends have asked, What is there to do in Poland? To be honest I had no answers. Having lived in the US for many years now where one seems to hear very little world news, I had no idea what to expect. So I began my research. We are flying into Warsaw -The largest city and the capital of Poland, and Central European centre of culture and business. My excitement for Shelley and her Olympic quest very quickly seemed slightly insignificant in the shadow of the history we were about to be absorbed in…….

Boulder Indoor Cycling

It's a hit! People love it and I can't get enough.

Boulder Indoor Cycling (BIC) opened around the holidays when I was in Australia. It only took about 24 hours of being back in Boulder for me to go try it. That day, I had a new part-time job of coaching classes at the velodrome. Life is good to me!

So, for about 2 months now, I have been coaching classes on our little 130m track that rides like a roller coaster. BIC has over 600 members and is open from 6am-10pm everyday. To nobody's surprise, the most common customer is either a junior or a casual cyclists. Of the 10 or so classes I teach, about 5 of them are junior classes and the others are "intermediate", which basically means the people can ride a bike but have no track experience. The ability ranges but everyone has one thing in common... they have a ton of fun! (Check out my facebook to see a video shot in one of my classes. I am tagged in the video so it should be on my page.)

On my way to work.

The track has received a TON of local media attention. Felt has sold every track bike they made for 2009 to a local bike shop which has in turn sold out. Seriously, the shops in Boulder (there are a million) are all selling track bikes. Tiemeyer's business is doing well since he is the best track frame builder around and happens to be local for us here in Colorado. Every time I turn around somebody I know here in Boulder has purchased a track bike. So much for recession!

Questions I get:
1) Who can ride the velo? EVERYONE. I HAVE SEEN ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE OUT RIDING- KIDS, ADULTS, PROS, PEOPLE WHO DON'T OWN A BIKE. NOBODY HAS GONE AWAY DISAPPOINTED.
2) Are they racing yet? YES. THERE IS RACING A COUPLE NIGHTS A WEEK. I HAVE NOT YET JOINED THE RACING FOR SEVERAL REASONS BUT I HAVE WATCHED. WE GET A TON OF SPECTATORS.
3) What about the mountain bike park? OH YA... THAT TOO. THERE IS A SUPER COOL MTN BIKE OBSTACLE COURSE THAT IS ALSO A HIT. THEY PLAN ON EXPANDING THIS SOON TO THE INFIELD OF THE VELO VIA A BRIDGE.
4) Can you do all your track training there? Do you still need to drive to the Springs? I WISH. THE BOULDER VELO IS GOOD FOR SOME THINGS AND NOT GOOD FOR OTHERS. I HAVE KILLER LEG SPEED AND MY HANDLING SKILLS HAVE REALLY IMPROVED. BUT, I CAN'T WORK ON MAX SPEED AND POWER AT THE BOULDER VELO. SO, I WILL STILL BE TRAINING A TON IN THE SPRINGS AND RACING THERE WEEKLY. ACTUALLY, I LEAVE FOR LA'S ADT CENTER AND A LITTLE DO-IT-YOURSELF TRAINING CAMP NEXT WEEK.
5) Has there been any crashes? YES. IT'S A TRACK. PEOPLE CRASH. NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY.
6) How many can be on the track at once? THERE IS A 10 PERSON LIMIT. IT IS SMALL. :)

Here is a good shot of the whole velo with a paceline on the backside.

Next time you guys are in Boulder... come on over and enjoy the Boulder Indoor Cycling center!

In the name of safety, registration will be limited to 12 teams of experienced riders. Please send me an e-mail if you are interested in racing, looks like this one is going to fill up. Have a look below at the confirmed teams below...this is going to be the real deal folks.

What is a Madison??

The madison began as a way of circumventing laws passed in New York, USA, aimed at restricting the exhaustion of cyclists taking part in six-day races.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle said:
"The wear and tear upon their nerves and their muscles, and the loss of sleep make them [peevish and fretful]. If their desires are not met with on the moment, they break forth with a stream of abuse. Nothing pleases them. These outbreaks do not trouble the trainers with experience, for they understand the condition the men are in."

The condition included delusions and hallucinations. Riders wobbled and frequently fell. But the riders were often well paid, especially since more people came to watch them as their condition worsened. Promoters in New York paid Teddy Hale $5,000 when he won in 1896 and he won "like a ghost, his face as white as a corpse, his eyes no longer visible because they'd retreated into his skull," as one report had it.

The New York Times said in 1897:[1]

"An athletic contest in which participants 'go queer' in their heads, and strain their powers until their faces become hideous with the tortures that rack them, is not sport. It is brutality. Days and weeks of recuperation will be needed to put the Garden racers in condition, and it is likely that some of them will never recover from the strain."[1]

SHELLEY OLDS SELECTED FOR WORLDS TEAM

For Immediate Release:
"Dare to dream".........PROMAN rider Shelley Olds to race Track World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland.
It only seems so recently that I got a call from Shelley that she had won her first cat 4 race. It was one of the best messages I had ever received and i kept it for months. She was so ecstatic and I could see her desire to win early on. Fast forward 3 years later and she will be representing the USA at the track world Championships. The ultimate goal being the London Olympics 2012.
Shelley is a dedicated athlete, dedicated to her training, her team and her family. I am so proud of her. The PROMAN team and Shelley have worked tremendously hard to get to this place. We formed a UCI track team 2 years ago and attended every world cup. We did this by generous donations from family, friends and even fellow racers. This grass roots team has shown that anything is possible. Shelley earned her spot with consistent top ten results in both world cup points and scratch races and finishing the world cup season in Ballerup with a bronze medal.

Shelley finished overall in the UCI standings
5th Scratch
10th Points
and overall in the world cup standings
6th points
7th scratch

There are so many people to thank for the opportunities set before us, i cannot begin to name names in fear of leaving someone out. We are so grateful for all of the support.
~ Nicola

"I just received the news and I could not be happier. I am so proud to be representing our country on the track at the World Championships. It's an absolute honor. It has taken so much work and support from many people to get to this point and its another step towards 2012. I have a month of hard work ahead of me as I prepare, but I am looking forward to having fun with it. I am ready for the challenge and excited for what lies ahead of me." ~ Shelley
