ProMan's Lorraine Jarvis 2009 UCI Track Masters World Champion - 500m

After a successful National Championship in Colorado Springs, Jarvis headed for Sydney Australia for the UCI Masters World Championships.

The first event of the week was the 500m.
"For two years, my goal has been to beat the 500m world record of 39.70 set in 2007.”
Lorraine, a Vice President and 26 year veteran of Wells Fargo Bank in downtown San Francisco, can often be seen commuting from San Anselmo several times a week. She was hit by a car during her commute earlier this year, but with the help of the Exogen bone stimulator she recovered quickly from a broken clavicle and refocused on her goal of becoming a World Champion. Jarvis spearheads our team community clean up day, an annual event in which team members pick up trash along the popular commute route from Sausalito up to the Golden Gate Bridge. Jarvis a competitive Volleyball player for many years was encouraged into track racing by her husband and coach Kelly Silberberg. Her first event in 2004 was the 500m at Northern California State Championships which she won.
Jarvis commented " I heard that 2009 Masters Nationals were going to be in Colorado Springs and I considered adjusting my training to peak at Nationals for a chance at that record, but my husband convinced me to "keep my eye on the prize," which of course was to win at Worlds two months later. I stuck with my training schedule and here I am today with the rainbow jersey and a time of 39.42! Thank you coach Kelly!!!"
Lorraine also scored a bronze medal in the match sprint, taking the win over Marian Renshaw (mother to Columbia lead out sensation - Mark Renshaw). Up next for this unstoppable masters rider, is a World Record attempt in the 500m but that's after a well deserved winter break.

US announce five riders for Manchester World Cup - Cycling News

The ProMan Hit Squad's Five foot assassins are getting ready to storm Manchester.

Without Phinney, small team to focus on Scratch and Points races

The United States has selected a five-rider squad for the opening round of the World Cup season, this weekend in Manchester this weekend. In the absence of individual pursuit World Champion Taylor Phinney, the US team will focus its efforts on the Scratch and Points Race events.

Daniel Holloway (Garmin-Holowesko-Felt) will contest the men's Points Race in Manchester, while Colby Pearce will carry the team's hopes in the men's Scratch race. The duo will then combine to contest the Madison, an event the partnership won at the US National Madison Championships in 2008.

The three-person women's team have all been drawn from the Proman Hit Squad. Coryn Rivera and US Scratch Race Champion Shelley Olds will represent the USA in the women's Points and Scratch races. US Omnium and Team Sprint Champion Cari Higgins will join Olds and Rivera in the Scratch race.

With the exception of the women's Keirin the US team will skip the sprint-based events at the World Cup. Higgins, who finished third at the women's Amsterdam six-day on Saturday, will be the USA's sole representative in the women's Keirin.

Amsterdam Six Day - Madison win

1st Cari Higgins & Eva Heinjmens

Amsterdam Six Day - Days 2 & 3

Madison
2nd Cari Higgins & Ava Heijmens

Overall
3rd Cari Higgins & Ava Heijmens

Racing is great. Tough. Different style from the US.

On day 2 my partner and I took a lap with 2 other teams. This put us 1 lap up on most teams but 1 lap down from the leaders. There is 1 or 2 other teams that have more points but no lap. Therefore we must keep a keen eye on those team. If they lap we move down in the overall placing. That’s a lot of lingo for you non-cyclists.

Day 3 we struggled at first because we once again started in the back. It’s total chaos back there and is great for practicing my survival skills. We were able to protect our lap and managed to finish 2nd in the bunch sprint and 3rd over all. Eva and I are getting really good at communicating. Each day we improve drastically. Yet, we still manage to miss exchanges at critical moments. Today we missed an exchange at about 10 laps to go which left me stranded out there for a while.

Today is day 4 and I look forward to a better day. Yesterday my head seemed to be in the clouds. I wasn’t nervous which isn’t always good. It seems to me that if you aren’t nervous then you aren’t really excited. Too many nerves is bad but too few is bad too. Yesterday, I had no nerves and, therefore, no adrenalin.

I finally slept a whole night last night. The last 2-3 nights, I can’t keep track, I have fallen asleep at 5am. Last night I took 2 Advil PMs and slept for about 10 hours. It should help my head today!

The other US contingent showed up today. Although I haven’t seen them, it’s nice to know they are here and I will have some more companionship the next couple days.

Cross Vegas

Cross is usually a big part of my plate every year, but with the addition of UCI Track World Cups, cyclocross was pushed off to the side a bit. But my passion for cross didn't just get dropped into the garbage disposal, I tested out my new Fuji cross bike at a local cross race series in San Dimas in which I placed first. The awesome handling skills of my Fuji propelled me over a run-up while most people had to dismount and run and that was where I made most of my time over the competition. Then I headed into Cross Vegas knowing that there was going to be some big girls racing. When the race started I sprinted myself into 7th and thats were I stuck for about 2 laps or so. As the lactic acid started to catch up to me I slowly began to fade my way to 19th and that was where I finished. But thanks to the crowd for screaming and yelling to numb the pain.

SIX DAYS OF AMSTERDAM

Travel was somewhat flawless except that my bike didn’t show up on the same schedule.Luckily it has shown up and all is good. This is why 1) you always travel one day earlier then you think you need to, and 2) you always carry on your shoes, pedals, and helmet. You can always borrow a bike!

The first 24 hours and my sleeping patterns were all kinds of messed up. I followed all the rules but the body didn’t cooperate. I am writing this now, after 2 nights here, and I think I am all set. I slept 10 hours last night thanks to the help of my friend Advil PM.

To recap the first 2 days here, I will just show some pictures in no particular order because internet is paid by the minute and I don't want to waste time!

Now, it’s the morning of the first day of racing. Tonight will be a show! For people who don’t know 6-day racing, I like to describe it like boxing in Las Vegas… its all about entertainment. The big names are here and the promoter expects everyone to put on a show. Don’t get me wrong, the racing will be tough. But, it will be fun too!

A couple random thoughts-

- Dutch people are incredibly nice. All of them.

- I am actually enjoying instant coffee. I brought my press but haven’t used it yet.

- My Swiss roommate and I can hardly communicate.

- Internet is not the same as in the US.

- Live cycling on TV!

- The manager of the velodrome wore a Uni of Colorado jacket yesterday in honor of me/them. I still can’t believe they won.

- Congrats to Lorraine Jarvis!!!! Masters World Champion in the 500m. So proud!

DAY 1
1 down and 5 to go. I was glad to get the first night under my belt. I had some extra nerves and general anxiety about racing in a situation that was unfamiliar.
We ended 4th overall on the night. We each raced individual elimination races which gain points towards the team if you place in the top 5. Eva did her job and got some points… I, on the other hand, didn’t. I got in a bad position and eliminated in the middle of the pack. There really is a different style of racing and that was a wake up call for me.

Our Madison together was FUN! We made plenty of mistakes and will clean those up and do better next time. Here were a couple of the learning points:

- don’t miss exchanges. We missed 2 which left me stuck in the race. A team never wants to miss exchanges and really don’t want to leave the sprinter in there in such a high paced race for that long. Eva learned from those misses and we won’t make those mistakes again.

- I needed to be more aware of the lap counter. It was different here because we raced it like a scratch race with time counting backwards and then when the time ran out we had 10 laps. Well, I wasn’t really paying attention. By the time I thought to look up there sign said 2. I thought it was 2 minutes but it was 2 laps. Oops! Our plan was to have me in there for the sprint but instead I threw Eva in thinking we had 2 minutes on the clock. She finished 4th which was great but that wasn’t the plan. I guess it would help if I spoke the language since the announcer was counting down the laps. But, of course, I didn’t understand at all.

- I was the one who started the race and Eva started on relief. We needed to start towards the front. I had no problem with this but some instructions from a race director before the race had me confused with the rules on moving up at the beginning. I ended up towards the back and that was a mistake. It was a fast race and hard to move up!

I got home last night and couldn’t sleep until 5:00am- I slept from 5-11am. I think I was on sensory overload and my mind was racing about the racing and what I was going to do differently the next race. Tonight I take an Advil PM!

I am going to try and attach some videos… hopefully it will work. I left my real camera in the hotel room and all these pictures and video were taken with my iPhone.

BTW- reason #42
I really like Europe- even average hotels have really nice Grohe bathroom fixtures. None of this American Standard stuff.

Higgins elected USAC Athlete Trustee

Higgins elected USAC Athlete Trustee

Colorado Springs, Colo. (October 13, 2009) -- USA Cycling announced on Tuesday that its member athletes elected Cari Higgins to the position of Athlete Trustee.

Higgins will serve as one of two athlete representatives on the United States Cycling Federation (USCF) Board of Trustees. The USCF is an association within USA Cycling; it governs all disciplines of cycling.

"I am looking forward to improving the communication between the athletes and their governing body,” Higgins said. “It is an honor to act as the voice of athletes in the political process."

Cari Higgins is a seven-time US National Track Champion, including the 2009 Women's Omnium, and four-time Pan Am Championship medalist. She rides for the PROMAN Hit Squad, is coached by national record holder Missy Thompson, and lives and trains in Boulder, Colo. Committed to the development of cycling, she and Thompson founded the Flatiron Flyers Junior Cycling Project, also based in Boulder.

Next week Higgins will join Dutch rider Eva Heijmans to compete in the classic Amsterdam Six-Day track race. Following that, she will compete in the first track World Cup of the season in Manchester, England.

Scratch Race Report. photos: Rob Evans

ProMan’s Shelley Olds 2009 Elite National Scratch Champion

Olds successfully defended her 2008 title with a very impressive win.
She is one of the most versatile riders in the peloton, earlier this year she finished second in stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia and more recently came away with a 3rd place on stage 5 and the sprinters jersey at Giro Della Toscana.

With all four ProMan riders making it to the finals, the scene was set for a fast race.
Teammate, 17-year-Old Coryn Rivera launched an attack right off the line, drawing out the field. A potential winning move of ProMan’s Christen King & Theresa Cliff Ryan was bought back after establishing a considerable gap, Olds countered, dug deep and lapped the field.

Rivera, in her very first Elite Track Nationals final, rode a very attentive and aggressive race. She is now old enough to compete in her first UCI World Cup season and will be racing Manchester World Cup at the end of the month, along with Cari Higgins and Shelley Olds. King and Alves-Hyde raced very well, each looking at winning opportunities but the move of the race was Shelley’s well-timed attack.

Prior to the scratch race Higgins, Olds and King raced the team pursuit to a silver medal, behind the winning team of Sarah Hammer, Dotsie Bausch and Kim Geist.

Other notables:
Cari Higgins added to her medal count with a silver in the 500m.
Hanan Alves-Hyde scored a personal best in the Individual Pursuit.

ProMan’s Cari Higgins 2009 Elite National Omnium Champion

ProMan’s Cari Higgins 2009 Elite National Omnium Champion

The first National Championship Omnium was held at ADT Velodrome, Carson CA with ProMan’s Cari Higgins coming out on top. Higgins recent success at Pan American Championships, with 4 medals, is an indication that the Boulder resident is on the rise.
Higgins finished an impressive first in three of the five events, a second and a fourth place.

“This was the most important race for me this week because I feel like on the world level this is where I’m most competitive,” explained Higgins. “I really wanted to show what I can do in this event and the dominance of our entire ProMan squad.”

Higgins team mate, Christen King took fifth place honors. (second place points race and 3rd place 2k pursuit)
Hanan Alves- Hyde rode a very solid first omnium.

ProMan Racing last year held the inaugural Women’s International Style Omnium at Hellyer Velodrome, San Jose CA. The Omnium consists of five events, 200m, 500m, 2k, points race and scratch race with riders scoring the same number of points as their finishing position in each race. So, five first places would give a final score of five points. Five second places would give a score of 10 points. Lowest points total wins. The Omnium is now a World Championship event and is being considered for the 2012 London Olympics.

Cari will be joined today by 2008 National Scratch race champ Shelley Olds, Christen King, Coryn Rivera, Hanan Alves-Hyde & Lorraine Jarvis. The squad will be racing 500m, team pursuit and scratch race.

National Omnium Champion - Cari Higgins

After collecting four medals at this year’s Pan American Track Cycling Championships, Higgins began her quest for the Stars-and-Stripes tonight, winning what is to be the first of eight events she will contest at these national championships. Cari grabbed the sixth national title of her career in impressive fashion placing first in three of the five omnium events.

“This was the most important race for me this week because I feel like on the world level this is where I’m most competitive,” explained Higgins. “I really wanted to show what I can do in this event and the dominance of our entire Proman squad.”
