In muggy, humid, stifling weather, the Elite and U23 National Time Trial Championships were contested today. Spanning two states, the rolling course took the riders from South Carolina back into Georgia for a total of 30 kilometers of racing.

After a bitter silver medal last year due to mechanical complications, Tayler Wiles put her stamp on the 2011 National Championships, handily winning the U23 competition. The Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 rider bested second place Jerika Hutchinson by 43 seconds. Wiles’ Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 teammate, Coryn Rivera, also had an impressive ride, finishing fourth.

"This National Title means a great deal to me, this time trial has been one of my biggest goals all year and with the incredible support of my team, our

The excitement here in Augusta is just beginning with tomorrow’s evening 50 km Criterium Championships. The National Road Race Championships are on Sunday on a very tough course. With a strong team and lots of options, Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 is ready to do battle for another Stars and Stripes jersey.

Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12’s Starnes blossoms into her potential – finishing in Yellow

Today’s fourth and final stage at the Merco Credit Union Cycling Classic was the 120 KM Almond Blossom Road Race. Waking to pattering drops of rain, an early start, chilly temperatures and gray skies did nothing to lighten the mood of the starters. As the race unfolded, so did the weather, leaving the competitors wet, cold and covered in grime. However, the rain did nothing to dampen the feisty racing, as HTC and Tibco unleashed early attacks, one after another, trying to loosen Alison Starnes’ grip on the Yellow Leader’s Jersey.

It looked like the relentless attacks would never cease, until finally Tibco’s Kendal Ryan succeeded in breaking the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 leash on the field. Shortly after, HTC’s Ally Stacher, and Starla Teddergreen (Vanderkitten-Focus) joined her. After 12 kilometers, Peggy Legrand (US Military) bridged and the foursome worked well together.

Although none were a threat to Starnes’ Yellow Jersey, the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team began their seamless rotation at the front. However, the cohesive foursome slowly put time into the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 powerful rotation, with some thinking maybe this would be the group that finally edged their way through the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12’s control of the peloton.

Just when it looked like the break might have some hope, Starnes’ well oiled machine brought the pace up and within a few kilometers the group was back in the fold. At this point, Teutenberg and third place Pascale Maria Schnider put pressure on the now stretched thin field, sensing weakness in the Peanut Butter & Co. Team.

As HTC and Schnider upped the ante, the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 answered in kind and soon the field was Groupo Compacto and headed to the finish line for what was to be an inevitable fireworks between the top sprinters in the field, Teutenberg, Schnider and Tamayo.

As Tamayo’s team wound up for the sprint, the pace reached 30 mph, and HTC matched Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12’s speed pedal stroke for pedal stroke. As the group crested the final hill and the lead-out riders pulled off it was Teutenberg, Schnider and Tamayo in a drag race to the finish. At the line it was Teutenberg throwing her hands in the air for the victory over Schnider and Tamayo in third.

Today’s win was Teutenberg’s second of the race, and secured her the “Combined Jersey” competition. Her young HTC teammate, Amanda Miller’s, stellar ride on day one put her in the White Young Rider’s jersey which kept throughout the entire race.

However, the big winner of the 2011 edition of the Merco Credit Union Stage Race was Alison Starnes and her Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 teammates. Kicking off the 2011 season with a fantastic show of unity and well executed teamwork, the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team is off to a great start. Schnider finished second to Starnes and narrowly edged out her Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 teammate McGrath, who finished in third.

The Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team now has a brief break before racing kicks off again next weekend. The next North American Stop is the San Dimas Stage Race, followed shortly thereafter by the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

Teutenberg’s Supersonic Speed Claims the Win in Stage Three of the Merco Credit Union Cycling Classic

Teammate Starnes Remains Brilliant in Yellow

Today’s third stage of the Merco Credit Union Cycling Classic was a downtown criterium, featuring a 180 degree hairpin turn at the top of the course. Held under sunny skies, downtown Merced was warm and welcoming for the 52 women competitors as they rolled to the start line. Racing for 40 laps, totaling 32 miles, the race was a show down between the wily and race savvy HTC Team and the young, raw talent of the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team.

The race got off to a brisk start with attacks early on. Nothing stuck until HTC’s Amanda Miller slipped off the front, and was joined by two other riders. The break remained for almost half the race, but never opened more than a 15 second gap, with the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team calmly protecting Race Leader Alison Starnes’ lead behind.

With 16 laps to go the field was back together and the attacks came fast and furious from the HTC team, With Ina Teutenberg repeatedly blasting off the front of the group; with every attack matched by the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team. Team Tibco and Vanderkitten also took their turn, and all were responded to immediately. Although the attacks kept coming, they were in vain; with 10 laps to go it was clear a field sprint would ensue.

As the laps counted down, HTC, Team Tibco and Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 organized their lead-outs, increasing the speed and fighting to position into the hairpin turn. Elbow to elbow, each team fought to get their sprinter the advantage into and out of the turn.

Coming into the final turn it was a battle between with HTC and Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team, as young rider Tayler Wiles and Double Irish National Champion Olivia Dillon brought teammates Lauren Tamayo and 19 year old Coryn Rivera to the forefront of the action. HTC was pounding away beside them, bringing the champion, Teutenberg into position. With 200 meters to go it was Teutenberg rocketing to the finish line with 32 time National Champion, Rivera fighting hard to get by her. In the end, Teutenberg claimed the win with Rivera nipping at her heals. Third went to Pascale Maria Schnider.

With the General Classification unchanged, tomorrow’s Stage Four will see Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12’s Alison Starnes in Yellow at the start of 72 mile Almond Blossom Road Race, followed by teammate Kristin McGrath in second. Their work will be cut out for their Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team, as Miller’s HTC Team and Schnider’s Red Racing Team are sure to bring double barrels to the race in an effort to unseat Starnes and McGrath from their stranglehold on the General Classification. Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 rises to meet the challenge

The Merco Credit Union Cycling Classic kicked off four days of racing today in sunny Merced County. Despite being held in an area whose roads have seen many different races, today’s stage was held on a new course around the Lake McClure area. Stunningly beautiful, and breathtakingly challenging, today’s route was a 12.5 mile course that the women’s 1,2,3 categories raced 58 miles on. With 864 feet of climbing per lap and a hard uphill finish, the 52 rider field had their work cut out for them.

On the start line were some of the premiere teams in the country including Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12, Team Tibco/To the Top, Vaderkittin/Focus and Primal/Map my Ride. Regional teams like Metromint , Red Racing and Touchstone also had representatives in the field. The top team in the world, HTC, was present, albeit with three riders. However, no matter how small the contingent, if HTC’s leader, Ina Teutenberg is present, hard, fast and smart racing is sure to ensue.

Teutenberg got things off to a brisk start when she attacked, bringing Swiss National Champion Pascale Maria Schnider with her. Teutenberg would soon attack Schnider, leaving her to be re-absorbed by the peloton and would go it alone for most of the 4.5 lap race.

As Teutenberg fiercely fought her way into the wind, the Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty Twelve Team manned the chase behind, organizing quickly and working with seamless teamwork. The gap would swell to nearly 2 minutes at one point, but the work alone into the wind soon called Teutenberg to task.

In the end, after a brave effort, Teutenberg was brought back into the fold on the bottom of the final QOM climb. From there until the finish, the pace was conservative as the women allowed a natural selection to take place on the final climb to the finish.

As the group snaked their way onto the final climb, Kristin McGrath (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) tried a series of short attacks, to no avail, and at the 500 meter to go mark it was Amanda Miller (HTC), Alison Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) and Flavia Oliveira. Charging to the line, Miller passed Starnes, with Oliveira making a late surge for second.

Miller’s win puts her in Yellow for tomorrow’s 12 mile time trial, with Oliveira and Starnes trailing her in a close second and third. Miller’s brilliant race also garnered her the Young Rider’s jersey, with her teammate Teutenberg claiming the Combined QOM and Sprint Leader’s Jersey.

Peanut Butter & Co. Had three riders in the top ten, with new up and comer, Tayler Wiles in fifth and McGrath in sixth. The Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 riders will certainly have their work cut out for them to strip Miller of the coveted Yellow Jersey. However, with the cohesive team work exhibited by the Lauren Tamayo, Olivia Dillon and Alisha Welsh today, Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12 looks like the team who will give HTC a run for their money.

The time trial kicks off tomorrow at 1 pm for the women.

During the winters I either focus on track or cyclocross. This winter I chose to race cyclocross. I had a short and intense cyclocross season because I took a big break from what I'd like to call a successful road season. While I usually start my cyclocross season with races like Cross Vegas, I didn't start riding until mid-October.

The beginning of my season included local Southern California races like Spooky Cross, Storm the Beach, Convert Cross, and UCI weekend at Griffith Park. I won the majority of the local races except the UCI weekend when international racers, like Sue Butler, and elite national contenders, like Kathy Sherwin and Barb Howe, showed up and I was still able to place top 5.

Then came the height of my cyclocross season which is Portland USGP and US Cyclocross National Championships. My weekend at the Portland USGP was marred with bad luck on both days with 20th place on the first day and 19th place on the second day. The first day was a bit of a rude awakening between local cross racing and the USGP series, I had a bad start and I didn't find my rhythm until halfway through the race. The second day I had a good start and planted myself in 4th wheel behind the Luna girls, I got too anxious then hit a stake and hit the deck hard. I got back up and fought my way back but it wasn't enough. I was still hopeful for Nationals in the U23 competition. I had a week to refocus and get ready for Nationals. Thanks to Joan Hanscom and Sue Butler for sorting out our host housing. We stayed with Jordan, Katie and their son Ryder they were great hosts!

I love Bend especially because we get to stay with amazing hosts Renee, John, Grant, Max and Sydney. It makes for a very relaxed visit. It was extremely snowy when we arrived.

I rode the course almost everyday and the conditions were different every single day. I liked the course in Bend and memorized it.When it came down to race day I was just 2 rows behind my U23 competition, Kaitie Antonneau and Ashley James. I had a solid start and found myself a couple wheels behind my competition. I stayed calm and focused but one slip in the mud let my competitors get ahead of me. I got it together and then concentrated on just picking off riders one at a time. with 2 laps to go I caught Ashley James and I was in 2nd in the U23 competition. I kept on trucking and couldn't catch Kaitie Antonneau, who won the U23 race. Even if I only raced a handful of races, I am proud of my cyclocross season. Congrats to Kaitie who raced the entire cyclocross season consistently. She has been non-stop since helping me win my bronze medal at Jr Road World Championships. Kaitie will actually be on Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 in the upcoming road season and I am excited to have her racing with us.

With the announcement of new sponsors for the team in the upcoming road season, I was given the amazing opportunity to 'test' the new equipment. Roberge has a rich history as a team director. Successful U.S. program aims for Olympics

Kristin Armstrong, who just last week announced her comeback to the sport of cycling.

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL CYCLIST KRISTIN ARMSTRONG BEGINS TRAINING FOR 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES

Boise, ID (October 25, 2010) – After taking a one year break to give birth to her first child, Kristin Armstrong, 37, has announced she will be rejoining the sport to compete throughout 2011-2012, leading to the 2012 Olympic Games. The 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Cyclist and two-time World Time Trial Champion will be writing a new story of triumph and revival as a successful, accomplished and dedicated athlete, and mother.

With the 2009 World Cycling Champion title, 2008 Olympic Gold Medal, 2006 World Cycling title and five national championships under her belt, Kristin is the most successful female cyclist in US history and one of the strongest competitors for both the 2011 season and looking ahead to 2012. Her main focuses will be the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympic Time Trial.

“I love cycling and I love competing. I stopped racing after the 2009 World Championships not because I was burned out, but because my husband and I wanted to start a family,” said Kristin Armstrong. “I told myself from the beginning if everything went smoothly with the birth of our son, Lucas William, I would consider racing again.”

Kristin will be competing on Peanut Butter & Co. Team TWENTY12, a team she part owns with Nicola Cranmer. Throughout 2010, while Kristin was preparing for the birth of her son, Kristin directed Peanut Butter & Co. Team TWENTY12 to 88 podiums including 55 victories and 9 National Championships on the road. Her unmatched experience and expertise provided the future champions with much needed support and guidance.

“I fully recognize the challenge of returning to the sport at a world class level while being a mother. Of course, challenges and goals are what drive me and having the full support of my husband Joe and Lucas alongside me will make all the difference,” said Armstrong.
“I’m thrilled Kristin’s continuing to compete,” said Jim Miller, Vice President of Athletics, USA Cycling. “It would have been a shame to watch the next two years go by without her and know that Kristin still has the ability and desire to compete and challenge for both World and Olympic titles.”

Even though she was pregnant in 2010, the super athlete was heavily involved in cycling not only directing Team TWENTY12, but also hosting the Kristin Armstrong Cycling Academy, which gives cyclists of all ages camp-style coaching that focuses on skill and technique, as well as the importance of setting goals, overcoming obstacles and building confidence on and off the bike.
Additionally, Kristin is part owner of K-Edge Cycling Solutions, a high end bicycle component manufacturer that got its start designing and manufacturing chain catchers for Kristin’s Olympic bikes. Kristin is also active with the YMCA, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and a number of community-building activities. Since winning the gold medal in 2008, Kristin became a highly-sought after motivational speaker in Idaho and nationally.

At the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, 20 of the 286 female competitors in the USA team were mothers, although very few were gold medalists. Kristin’s ready to rewrite that chapter in Olympic history.

Team Ireland’s Olivia Dillon wrapped up victory in the Sneem Hotel Ras na mBan with a third place finish in Sunday’s fourth and final stage behind Kirsten Peetoom of the Dutch Moving Ladies squad.

Dillon was always in command throughout the testing 90km ride from Sneem to Waterville and back including two ascents of Coomaciste, adding victory in Ireland’s premier women’s international stage race to her national championship time trial and road race double earlier this year.

The US based Mayo full time professional rider was just prevented from securing a clean sweep of stage wins in the race by a determined drive for the line from Peetoom and Alli Holland of Shred Racing .

Just 17 riders were left in contention for stage honours on the uphill drag to the finish line at Sneem Hotel after a long arduous whittling down process that spread the field out into numerous small groups on the road.

Dillon was ever vigilant for attacks from her nearest challengers Alli Holland and Natalie Creswick of the Shred Racing Rapha Condor team but the determined efforts of the UK squad were not enough to unsettle the race leader.

The Irish squad put the pressure back on their rivals with a series of attacks from Jenny McCauley in the closing stages which the Shred Racing Rapha Condor riders were forced to control.

The end result was a group finish where Peetoom proved strongest, salvaging a top result for the title defending Moving Ladies squad.

Alli Holland’s second place made it three top three finishes for her from the three road stages, while Creswick secured the Queen of the Mountains title as Shred Racing Rapha Condor took the team award.

The County Rider Classification was won by Melanie Spath of the Usher Irish Road Club, the top mountain bike racer taking a fine sixth overall.

Afterwards the race winner reflected on a successful weekend’s racing around the roads of south Kerry.

“It’s been a great weekend and I’d like to say thank you to the Women’s Commission for inviting me and and to my team mates for all their help in defending the jersey through the weekend.

“It was far from straightforward. The Rapha girls did a fantastic job to make the race and they really put it up to us with lots of attacking throughout the weekend but we were able to cover them and it worked out great in the end.

“I’ve enjoyed racing in Ireland and I’d really love to come back to the race next year.”

Dillon Stars in Sneem!

Team Ireland’s Olivia Dillon justified her pre-race favourite’s tag by sprinting in for victory at head of a five-rider group at the end of the first stage of the Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan.

The US based Mayo woman kept enough in reserve for a fine sprint win ahead of Linda Ringlever of the Dutch Moving Ladies squad and Ally Holland (Shred Racing-Rapha Condor) at the end of a 58km stage that included an ascent of Moll’s Gap.

Dillon led the chase of lone attacker Natalie Creswick (Shred Racing-Rapha Condor) who looked like she might hold on for a fine solo win after riding clear on her own on the ascent of Moll’s Gap until she was caught inside the final kilometre after 24km out front.

While Creswick’s brave bid for glory just fell short she had the consolation of donning the Queen of the Hills Jersey after taking maximum points at the top of both classified climbs.

The first five riders contested the win on the downhill run to the finish in Sneem with Dillon powering home two seconds clear of Ringlever and 1m36s ahead of a greatly depleted bunch led home by Anika Werheit of Team Lexxi Chicks.

Gillian McDarby (Usher Irish Road Club) took seventh and with it became the first rider to wear the leader’s jersey in the new County Rider classification which is set to become a coveted prize for locally based riders.

A record entry enjoyed perfect weather conditions for racing on a testing course using some of the toughest roads in Ireland. That combined with the relentless pace took its toll and the race quickly fragmented into numerous groups.

Up front Rapha Condor led the attacks with the Ireland squad controlling it for Dillon on the rolling approach to Moll’s Gap. Creswick, from Reading in Berkshire, made her bid on the long drag to the top and only Dillon, Ringlever, Holland and Matthysse Mathilde of the PSUK squad could follow.

With Holland playing a watching brief as her team-mate Creswick piled on the pressure, Dillon, Ringlever and Mathilde worked to pare the 20 seconds advantage that Creswick had eked out and just about managed to do it in time.

Afterwards Dillon expressed her relief and satisfaction after a tough stage.

“I’m absolutely delighted to take this win,” said the San Francisco based Kiltimagh native. “I drove the pace on Moll’s Gap and we had a hard chase to catch Natalie. Luckily we managed to catch her in time and I was able to take the win.

“The team gave me great support and it’s great to take the first jersey of the race. Now I’ve got to keep it!”

The race resumes at 11am on Saturday with a 70km road race centred on circuits of Sneem followed by a 2km time trial in the afternoon while Sunday’s fourth and concluding stage is a 90km road race.

The event, promoted by the Women’s Commission of Cycling Ireland, once again benefits from the generous sponsorship support and organisation skills of Louis Moriarty of Sneem Hotel.

Final preparations are under way for the 24th running of Ireland’s top international cycle stage race for women, the Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan, which takes place from September 17th to 19th.

The race, supported by Sneem Hotel for the third year in a row, has attracted top international squads from the Netherlands, Germany, Serbia and the UK as well as an Irish national squad and a raft of club teams set to do battle on some of the most beautiful and challenging roads in Ireland.

Since the race moved to the Ring of Kerry three years ago it has gone from strength to strength and the growing status of the event is reflected in a 40% increase in rider numbers since last year with more than 80 riders expected on the start line in Sneem in two weeks time.

Irish national champion Olivia Dillon returns from the US where she is a fixture on the vibrant women’s racing scene to lead the Irish team against the quality opposition from across Europe.

Two teams from Holland, six teams from the UK and squads from Germany and Serbia will join the local teams which for the first time include provincial selections from Cycling Ulster, Leinster and Connacht.

The Dutch Moving Ladies squad which secured overall victory last year with England’s Emma Trott are back to defend their title with a crack selection of five top Dutch racers. Kerry’s own international star Michelle Geoghegan races with Moving Ladies on the continent but Michelle has been selected on the Ireland team for this year’s Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan.

However, Michelle is in a race against time to be fit for the event after dislocating her collarbone in a crash in Holland three weeks ago.

The racing gets under way on Friday evening with stage one of the Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan, a 60km route from Sneem to Kenmare and back to Sneem including an ascent of Molls Gap.

Stage two on Saturday morning is a 5km time trial in Sneem which will be followed in the afternoon by an 80km road stage on a 15km circuit finishing in the village.

The final stage on Sunday is the longest of the race, a 90km slog that will decide the destination of the Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan title for 2010.

The Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan is a festival of cycle racing throughout the weekend that also includes Youth Racing organized by Sneem Cycling Club.

Event organiser Valerie Considine believes that this year’s Sneem Hotel Rás na mBan is set to be best ever.

“These are great days for women’s cycling and it’s great to be able to showcase the sport with a top international race in such a fabulous setting,” says Considine. “The race has attracted a record entry this year reflecting the growth in the sport and with the continued generous support of Louis Moriarty and Sneem Hotel we’re looking forward to a great weekend of racing.

“The international riders are sure to be very strong on the beautiful and testing roads of the Ring of Kerry but with record numbers participating in the sport at local level we believe that the riders are coming through that can put it up to them.”

After placing 10th in the Jr Time Trial World Championships, I went after my goal for the year which was to win the Jr Road Race World Championship.

The race was 5 laps of 16k with 2k climb that basically made the race. First 3 laps were pretty uneventful but the climb still whittled the field down. The team was there to protect me at all times. Kendall Ryan and Kaitie Antonneau had my back on the sketchy descents and flat sections. Lap 4 I told Jessica Prinner to watch for any attacks from Italy or France. Next thing I knew Jessica covered an Italian attack which set me up to cover the counter move by France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevost. That move initiated the main break of 7 which included myself. I fought hard to follow the move, once I knew we had a solid gap I just had to set up for the last lap. Sorzi of Italy rolled off the front, but we could tell she was tired and wouldn't last long, we ended up catching her on the climb where a few girls got dropped. Going into the last kilometer it was Pauline Ferrand-Prevost(FRA), Rosella Ratto(ITA), Canna Solovei(UKR), and myself. Solovei led out the sprint from 1k to go, then with 200m to go I started my sprint, I gave it my all and got the bronze medal.

USA Women are Creating History

The 21st edition of the Giro Donne saw three USA women winning stages and the GC. This unprecedented result bodes well for the future of U.S women’s cycling.
For the first time in the races history an American woman wins the overall.
Mara Abbott was 2nd in 2009 and this year she had her eye on the maglia rosa touted to be the most difficult Giro Donne to date, Abbott climbed into Pink on stage 8 and never looked back and took top honors with commanding style, finishing over 2 minutes ahead of 2nd place Judith Arndt from HTC Columbia.

"The courses were amazing," Abbott said. "It was so special to have the opportunity to win at the top of a climb like Stelvio. I came into the Giro knowing inside that I had the strength to win but that I would need luck, my team and a lot of mental fortitude. All of these things came through for me to an even greater extent than I ever could have imagined."

The final Stage Autodromo Di Monza - Monza 112.7km a fast flat stage, the goal was to protect Mara’s lead. If the race stayed together then her fellow National Team / Peanut Butter & Co.TWENTY12 team mate, Shelley Evans was going for a stage win.

The team averted any breakaways, securing Abbott’s GC. Evans was set up for the sprint. She managed to hold off a charging Cervelo Test Team rider, Kristen Wild and Georgia Bronzini of Gauss RDZ Ormu to take the 3rd stage victory in a row for USA. a huge result for newly crowned U.S National Criterium Champion Shelley Evans.

For Evans and her teammates it was the perfect way to end the 10 tough days of the UCI 2.2 Giro Ciclistico Internazionale Femminile, commonly known as the Giro Donne.

This U.S team created history, the Maglia Rosa comes to the USA for the very first time.

Minnesota Fixed Gear Classic

While her teammates were racing on the track in the west coast Testarossa Velodrome Challenge, Cari Higgins was taking the podium in Blaine, MN.

The Minnesota Fixed Gear Classic is part of the Nature Valley Bicycling Festival; it is the track portion that takes place before the Nature Valley Grand Prix.

Higgins dominated by winning both the sprint and endurance omniums. Expect more podiums this week from Peanut Butter & Co./TWENTY12 in Minnesota!

After the last three outings, it's become apparent the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic women's road race belongs to Mara Abbott.

Everyone else is just along for the ride.

Abbott saddled up for her third consecutive IHBC road race title, finishing in 2 hours, 37 minutes, 1 second to win by 4:47, while shaving 2:52 from her 2009 time.

The win moved Abbott into a tie with Juli Furtado for the most IHBC women's road race titles with three. Furtado won each year from 1993-1995.

SUPERIOR MORGUL CLASSIC - STREET SPRINTS

SUPERIOR -- Starts were tricky Friday in the first leg of the Superior Morgul Classic on a 300-meter stretch of Coalton Road southwest of Flatirons Mall. Those who found the right gear first generally hit the finish line ahead of the pack in an exciting and unique day of street sprints.

Cari Higgins of Boulder nailed the start in her two qualifying heats and the finals in the women`s pro race. She won all three sprints and earned the leader`s jersey plus valuable points heading into today`s criterium and the first edition of the Superior Morgul road race in 20 years on Sunday.

"It was awesome," Higgins said. "It`s so cool that the city of Superior is putting this on. It`s cool for fans to see us up close going fast."

Higgins said the key to her success was starting in the appropriate gear and then switching gears seamlessly to generate as much power as possible through the brief races that generally lasted less than a minute. Higgins has been racing for four years but had never competed in street sprints prior to Friday.

She said she believed training in Boulder`s velodrome helped her with the starts because cyclists often help each other start in similar fashion in training there. Higgins is a strong sprinter and will need the points earned Friday once the format changes to longer, more traditional racing styles today and Sunday.

Officials will crown an overall champion Sunday using Omnium scoring over the three different races. The street sprints provide the fewest amount of points of the three races.

"I think this was a first for all of us," she said. "It`s festive. It`s huger for me because sprinting is my strength. To maximize my points in this was really important."

A year ago, the Tour of the Gila was my first women's pro race. I didn't know a single rider as I pulled up to the start line in my parents' old red minivan. I stuffed extra bottles in my back pockets and crossed my fingers that I would make it through five days of the most challenging racing in the US. It was the first time that I saw girls in matching team kits pile out of cars completely covered in sponsor decals adorned with a half dozen bikes on the roof.

That year I watched as Kristin Armstrong ride to a dominating victory at the SRAM Tour of the Gila. This time, she returned to the race to direct the newly formed Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 Team. Stepping out of the team car painted with the peanut butter "monkey" on the hood and adorned with shiny new Fuji bikes built up with SRAM and tricked out with Edge wheels rolling on gold hubs, it felt a bit surreal to be standing alongside girls who have won major national and international events. These girls are stars, yet they set aside their personal ambitions and egos to ride for the team. Keeping the leader's jersey for five stages against the best teams in the US requires nothing less. I feel lucky to be a part of a squad that is focused not only on delivering wins but also developing riders. Thus far, the team has had great success in doing both.

In stage 1, the team rode together at the front to bring back a six minute break away. It was my job to lead Mara onto the final climb of the day and as the field shattered, she jumped off the front to capture the win by a significant margin. However, it was stage 2 where the team really had to pull together to keep Mara in the lead. I have ridden on windy days, but I have never been in a race with 80 mph wind gusts, big men walking their bikes, and chunks of roofing flying off nearby buildings. Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 drove it through this wind to gain back time on a dangerous break. By the end the team was shedding riders and I came off the back about 10 miles from the finish when a big gust of wind coming over a mountain pass literally spun me around 180 degrees on the road. However, at the finish Mara balanced carefully atop the remnants of the podium display overlooking the tipped over porta potties and put on the red jersey.
